New: Our full dataset on data protection laws is now public
As we strive to advance data protection in Africa by informing research, advocacy, and policy-making, we are pleased to announce some new updates to the Data Protection Africa site.
1. Showcasing the state of data protection in Africa through data visualisations
We have launched a new analysis series which use data visualisations to unpack common trends and comparisons across all African countries. The first installments track the development of data protection laws across different regions of the continent, and outline which countries regulate AI in their data protection laws. New data stories will continue to be posted in the weeks and months ahead.
2. Publishing our dataset
To enable other researchers, activists and policy makers to build on this work and conduct their own analyses, we have published our raw dataset for download. Access the dataset here.
3. Continual updates to country fact sheets
Our research now gives coverage of all 55 African Union-recognised countries, giving a detailed analysis of each data protection law, including its scope of application, how it defines personal data, requirements for collection and processing, and how it ensures transparency, accountability, and participation in the processing of personal information. You can learn more about the methodology on our ‘Methodology’ page here.
We hope these updates prove useful to researchers and activists working to protect and advance the right to privacy across the continent. If you’d like to reach out to discuss this work further, please email [email protected].
