Kenya: Data Protection Bill signed into law
On 8 November 2019, President Kenyatta signed the Data Protection Bill 2019 into law. As set out in section 3, the objects include the following:
- To regulate the processing of personal data.
- To ensure the handling of personal data is guided by the principles of lawful processing, minimisation of collection, restriction to further processing, data quality and security safeguards.
- To establish the legal and institutional mechanism to protect personal data.
- To provide data subjects with rights and remedies to protect their personal data from processing that is not in accordance with the law.
It further provides for the establishment of the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner.
